Day 1, Christmas 2016
The Elf on the Shelf is a popular Christmas tradition that we started in 2013! My oldest daughter was just four years and my son was two. My husband actually found this and decided to pick it up and I must say that I am so glad that he did because the elf is so much fun and we love seeing the reactions in our children’s faces when they find their elf at a new place!
The author of the books name is Carol and she has actually started this tradition in her own home with her kids! I love, love, love the backstory behind this because it was so important to her family and now she has shared this tradition with all of us so that WE too can enjoy this with our children.
The kit comes with a boy or a girl elf and the one that we have is a boy! I love how this kit comes with a book to explain the purpose of the Elf so that our children could understand why he comes to our house in December. The whole purpose of the Elf On The Shelf is for kids to understand how Santa would know if the children are behaving or not, the answer to this is the pixie elves! They come into our houses to observe if they are being naughty or nice and reports back to Santa each night. When the morning comes, the kids find that the elf came back and in a new place. My kids have SO MUCH FUN figuring out where the elf has gone next! In the back of the kit, it’s also encouraged for the children to talk to the elf even though the elf is not allowed to talk to the children. It kind of gives them the idea that someone is watching so that they know to remember to behave! Another important note is that if the children touches the elf, he will lose its magic! One time, their cousin accidently touched the elf and the kids were actually worried that the elf was going to get sick. Isn’t that so sweet that the children care so much about their little elf friend?
We have adopted the tradition since 2013 and my oldest daughter, Keilani, has named him Sandy! I still can’t believe that this will be our third year with Sandy. I can’t wait to see what creative imagination he will have this year! We have put him in so many random places that this year we might have to be way more creative than the last. I love it when I have to challenge my imagination because the reactions on my children’s faces are literally PRICELESS. Have you started this tradition yet with your children? It has become such a fun and amazing family tradition for us and it can be for your family too and so much more! Buy it now here:
